Baron Portal of Hungerford , of Hungerford in the County of Berkshire , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created for Sir Charles Portal on September 17, 1945 , on the occasion of his retirement from the office of Chief of the Air Staff . The title was awarded with the special addition that, in the absence of male offspring, it could also be passed on to his older daughter Rosemary and her male offspring. On January 28, 1946, he was also raised to the Viscount Portal of Hungerford , of Hungerford in the County of Berkshire, without any special additions.

Since he left no sons, the barony fell to his daughter as 2nd baroness on his death on April 22, 1971, while the Viscountcy expired. The baroness died in 1990 unmarried and childless, so that the barony also died out.
