Barrueco affair

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Barrueco affair concerns the scandal surrounding the Chávez -related entrepreneur Ricardo Fernández Barrueco, but is also related to other entrepreneurs who were close to the Chavez government.

Barrueco originally had a small truck company. During the general strike in Venezuela from 2002 to 2003, he helped the government by making his trucks available for the distribution of food. The transport network later became Mercal and Barrueco became rich. In 2009, Fernández took over the company Digitel GSM Oswaldo Cisneros for 800 million US dollars . In September and October 2009 Fernández headed a group of investors that wanted to take over four banks - Canarias, Confederado, Bolívar and BanPro. Fernández was arrested for fraud in late 2009. Its banks were taken over by the government during Venezuela's banking crisis from 2009 to 2010.

Another businessman and former military man, Arné Chacón, brother of Minister Jesse Chacón and a billionaire for years, was also arrested. Minister Jesse Chacón had to resign, but denied that he knew how his brother got his fortune.
