The Barva volcano is located a few kilometers from the capital of Costa Rica , San José . Three striking peaks also give the volcano the name Las Tres Marias . The deposits of the mighty Tiribi Tuff were created by an eruption 322,000 years ago, during which the central caldera of the volcano was formed. Four volcanic cones formed in the caldera with a diameter of 2 kilometers. Several cinder cones are found on the northern and southern flanks of the volcano. The only eruption dated by the method of tephrochronology took place in 6050 BC. Chr. ± 1000 years.
