Basílica Nuestra Señora del Carmen

The Basílica Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Basilica of Our Lady on Mount Carmel ) is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .

The Catholic church building , consecrated in 1891 , is located in the Barrio La Aguada on Avenida Libertador Brig. Gral. Juan A. Lavalleja , corner of Venezuela . Emilio Turini was responsible as the architect . In 1930 the current facade design was produced under the direction of the architects E. Boix and H. Terra Arocena . The Basílica Nuestra Señora del Carmen was the seat of the Primer Asamblea Nacional Constituyente , the first constituent national assembly.

Since 1975 the building has been classified as the Monumento Histórico Nacional .
