Bataireach

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bataireacht (Syn .: Uisce Beatha Bata Rince, short form "Bata") (Irish Gaelic for stick fighting ) is a recreational sport practiced in Ireland, especially in the years 1750-1880, which was later replaced by other sports.

It denotes the Irish fighting system with the Shillelagh and is a historical European martial art that is still practiced to a small extent today. Nowadays, Bata includes more than just pure fighting techniques with the Irish style walking stick, but also sword fighting techniques, unarmed fighting techniques (boxing, wrestling) and the use of various wooden weapons (long stick, short stick, walking stick, club, etc.). The Americans John W. Hurley and Ken Pfrenger are considered reconstructors and experts on the subject of Bata and Shillelagh and have already held various seminars on them and wrote books on them.
