Battos II.
Battos II ( Greek Βάττος ὁ Εὐδαίμων ) was around 583-565 / 60 BC. As successor of his father Arkesilaos I, King of Cyrene .
Battos, who was nicknamed "the lucky one", issued a call for the colonization of Kyrenes by the Greeks around 580 , which was followed especially by the Peloponnesians.
Battos was supported by a saying by the Oracle of Delphi , which read:
- If you arrive too late to the much-vaunted Libya,
- When the fields are divided, he will regret it bitterly.
This led to a conflict with Libyans and Egypt. Battos' victory over Egypt led in 570 BC. For the dethroning of Apries by Amasis . and resulted in a great upswing in Kyrenes. Presumably with this event the rebellious Libyans came under the direct rule of the king of Cyrene.
