Details

A previous house on this site belonged to the Braids , then to the Fairlies , but then by marriage to the Forresters of Niddry . From them it was in the 16th century to the Mowbray of Barnbougle and then to the family Dundas , presumably the residential tower were built with L-shaped floor plan, which is still the core of the country house today. In 1628 the property fell to the Scotts from Harperigg .

Mary Stuart and King James VI both stayed at Bavelaw Castle.

Over time, Bavelaw Castle fell into ruin, but was restored and expanded for Sir Robert Lorimer around 1900 . He had the former outbuildings connected to the original residential tower, installed larger windows, built a tourelle to increase the space in the attic and converted the basement.

Today Bavelaw Castle is owned by the Douglas-Miller family , the previous owners of the Jenners department store chain . Historic Scotland has listed it as a Category A Historic Building.
