Bayan Salman (Kurdish به‌یان سه‌لمان; born 1961 in Kirkuk , Kurdistan , Iraq ) is a Kurdish-speaking writer, poet and translator who writes her works in Kurdish, Arabic and French. She has lived in Paris since 1998.

life and work

After finishing school in Kirkuk, she studied at the University of Baghdad, where she graduated in economic policy. From 1988 to 1992 she taught economics at Ranya Technical High School in Northern Iraq. After the uprising of the Kurds and Shiites in 1991 , she settled in Sulaimaniyya and worked with various NGOs. After numerous political unrest in Kurdistan, she moved to France in 1998. There she studied contemporary and French literature at the University of Paris VIII . After working for the Kurdish television station Tishk TV in Paris, she took over the management of Concept magazineand helped found Sardami Jn (L'Ère des femmes) magazine. In 2013 she founded the Kurdish-French magazine TRANSCULTURES. Bayan Salman has translated numerous works, including the novel Les Grottes de Haydrahodahus by the well-known Syrian writer Salim Barakat from Arabic into French, which was published by Editions Actes Sud in 2008. In 2016, she received the highest award given to writers by Kurdish Endeshe Verlag for her Kurdish-language novel Adams Nights (شه‌وانی ئاده‌م).
