content

Stephen is a 17 year old English foster child living on the edge of the law. He had to move from family to family, but always took his big secret with him: He's hiding a giant crocodile that has been wild since it was born. Stephen's criminal father gave it to him when he was a child. The memory of his deceased brother Selby is also formative for him.
Beast tells the story of his murderous intentions against this monster and his growing relationships, as well as stories from his childhood.

Narrative form

In the book, tension is mainly generated by the special narrative behavior : Beast is told in the lyrical I in the present tense . This combination creates the feeling that you yourself are present at the action. There is also no omniscient narrator.

“I throw the trash bag in my trunk. I realize that if I don't get caught, I can't do this every day. That way the monster gets bigger. My car won't start. When I turn the key, nothing happens. I realize that I left the light on. It's foggy this morning. "Shit!" I hit the dashboard with my fist. What now?..."
