Differentiation of meaning

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Differentiation of meanings as a technical term from linguistics , especially language contact research, is a type of semantic transfer .

A new term is introduced for an element of a language to specify the original meaning.

For example, the word bike is used and not “bicycle” to underline its use as a sports device. The word baby is also used instead of “infant” and “toddler”, which are official names, because baby conveys an emotional value.
