Beehive Geyser is a geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park in the United States .

Beehive is one of the jet-like geysers. Beehive is the English term for beehive. The geyser got its name in 1870 by the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition . The approx. 1.2 m high eruption cone reminded the expedition members of a beehive. About 3 m away from the Beehive is another small jagged jet-like geyser that is connected to the Beehive, Beehive's Indicator .

Beehive and Beehive's Indicator can be viewed over the Internet from the Old Faithful video webcam .

Eruptions

The eruptions of the Beehive geyser last about five minutes, the throwing height is about 60 meters. The fountain maintains its height during almost the entire eruption, it only collapses slightly towards the end of the eruption. It consists of a very fine steam-water aerosol that is ejected vertically. A thundering vapor phase closes the eruption. It can be heard over half a kilometer away. The interval between outbreaks (IBE) is 8 to 24 hours in summer. Winter outbreaks are very irregular. There are series of eruptions both in summer and in winter, to which the geyser behaves very regularly. At these times the IBE is approx. 10 to 20 hours, the interval is longer towards the end of this series.

The neighboring Beehive's Indicator has a throw height of 4.5 to 7.6 m. It erupts a few seconds to 30 minutes, but usually between 15 and 20 minutes before the main eruption of the Beehive geyser. When the Beehive geyser erupts, the indicator continues its eruption for a while and stops during the Beehive geyser eruption. Beehive announces his eruptions with a "foreplay", that is, a few short pre-eruptions take place before the main eruption.

In the 1990s, Beehive was considered inactive for three years. During this time the indicator erupted for times up to 60 minutes and no beehive eruption followed the indicator eruption.
