The siege of sanjō palace in Kyoto on 19th January bis 5. February 1160 was the most important military conflict of the Heiji Rebellion of 1159 / 1160 . At the beginning of January 1160, after Taira no Kiyomori , who was influential at the imperial court , had left Kyōto with his family on a pilgrimage, Fujiwara no Nobuyori and Minamoto no Yoshitomo saw the opportunity to make changes in the government that were acceptable to them. With about 500 men, they attacked the Sanjō Palace at night, in which the resigned Emperor Go-Shirakawa lived. Then they set fire to the palace. Go-Shirakawa was brought to the Imperial Palace and held there together with the ruling Emperor Nijō , who also supported their enemies, the Taira and Fujiwara no Michinori .
