Siege of Timisoara
There have been several sieges of Timișoara , now Romanian Timișoara , over the centuries.
16th Century
- Siege of Timisoara (1514) : During the Hungarian Civil War, a popular army under György Dózsa besieged Timisoara. The besiegers were destroyed by Johann Zápolya , the prince of Transylvania.
- Siege of Timisoara (1551–1552) : This siege took place in the course of another Ottoman campaign in the Balkans under Kara Ahmed . Defended by Stefan Losconczy , the city fell into Ottoman hands after months of siege, some of which had been broken off.
- Siege of Timisoara (1596) : When the Transylvanian Prince Sigismund Báthory attempted to recapture Timisoara , the fortress was enclosed on all sides on June 11, 1596. After 40 days the siege was abandoned due to insufficient supplies.
- Siege of Timisoara (1597) : In the following year, Báthory sent an army under the command of his Chancellor Stefan Josika to try again to conquer Timisoara, which besieged the fortress from October 17 to November 17, 1597, but this time again without success.
Later sieges
- Siege of Timisoara (1716) : The last remaining Ottoman fortress in Hungary was besieged by Marshal Prince Eugene of Savoy during the Austro-Turkish War and captured after six weeks.
- Siege of Timisoara (1849) : The city was besieged by Hungarian revolutionary forces for three months before a Russian relief army under Generals Ivan Paskewitsch and Julius von Haynau blew up the siege.
