Belford Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belford Castle is an Outbound castle in the village of Belford in the English county of Northumberland . Today there is a crenellated house called Westhall on the site . The existence of an 11th century moth at this point is likely but not certain.

history

In the 11th century, a moth was probably created on the site where a modern farm stands today. Only earthworks remain from this castle today . A tower and moat were added in the 15th century . In 1415 the castle belonged to the D'Arcy family ; later it fell to the Conyers family and then to the Forster family and then to the Dixon family . In the 18th century the property was sold to William Clarke .

objection

Historian Philip Davis believes that due to the proven existence of a prehistoric castle on the site of today's Belfort Chapel, the construction of another fortified structure in the 11th century in the immediate vicinity is unlikely. The existing system would have been expanded.
