Bench Island , knownas Rarotoka among the Māori , is an island east of Stewart Island and south of the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The uninhabited island is located east of the entrance to Paterson Inlet ( Whaka a Te Wera ) from Stewart Island and around 7.5 km east of Oban , the only place on Stewart Island . Administratively, Bench Island is part of the Southland District of the Southland region .

Between The Neck Peninsula and Bench Island in the southwest is the 2.6 km wide Carter Passage and in the northeast of Bench Island is the Abbott Passage .

Flora and fauna

The island, which is overgrown with scrub and forest, is under protection and administered by the Department of Conservation . Barracudas , arrow squid and octopus live around the island . Among other things, they are prey for the New Zealand fur seals that live on the island .
