from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former Benedictine monastery in Neuburg an der Donau was founded in 1002 by the later Emperor Heinrich II . In 1007 it was transferred by him together with the nearby Benedictine convent of Bergen in 1007 to the diocese of Bamberg , which he founded .

A Jesuit college was established in its place in 1622; The Jesuits had been brought to his residence in 1613/14 by Wolfgang Wilhelm von der Pfalz (ruled 1614–1656), who converted to the Catholic faith, and had moved into the empty Benedictine convent. For their grammar school, founded in 1617, a new school building with a congregation hall was built on the 3rd floor in 1712/15.

With the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773, ownership of the monastery passed to the Order of Malta . The Maltese ball was abolished with secularization .

Since 1847 the building has been used as the Maria Ward Institute ( Englische Fräulein ) with a secondary school.
