The Bergwacht Sachsen is assigned to the rescue service and takes on the task of ensuring the rescue, rescue and medical care of climbers, hikers, skiers and tourists as well as the search for missing people in rough terrain and in the mountains.

The Bergwacht Sachsen was founded in 1912, is assigned to the DRK regional association of Saxony and is made up exclusively of volunteer workers. Air rescue is integrated into the mountain rescue service.

In the Saxon-Czech low mountain range there are 13 rescue stations of the Bergwacht Sachsen on the German side and 11 mountain rescue stations of Horská služba in the Czech region. In contrast to the Saxon mountain rescue service, the Czech mountain rescue service Horská služba is partly professionally organized, but is not yet present in the form of rescue stations , especially in the area of Bohemian Switzerland .
