The Gaffel Haus is the oldest building on the Alter Markt in the north of Cologne's old town and has been home to a brewery of the Cologne private brewery Gaffel since 1987 .

The historic house on Cologne's Alter Markt was mentioned in a document as early as 1213 and has existed in its current form since 1580. In this year, the councilor and thus the master of the stonemasons, Benedikt von Schwelm, acquired the northern half of the house. The year can still be seen on the wall anchors of the facade. Benedikt von Schwelm is considered to be the builder of the still existing twin building. While the northern part was initially called “Zur Brezel”, the southern part was named “Zum Dorn” from 1630 and later “Zurolden Sonne” (1767).

After extensive restoration work between 1910 and 1912, the semi-detached house burned to the ground in the Second World War ; it was rebuilt in 1955. In 1987, the Gaffel private brewery opened a brewery in the building (“Spezialausschank”), which has since been called “Gaffel Haus”. A gallery is built in above the door front and on the side walls as a mezzanine with 40 guest seats, which is traditionally called the hanging room .

The Gaffel Haus had been empty since the beginning of 2015. In addition to Cologne restaurateur Markus Zehnpfennig and event manager Markus Krampe, soccer player Lukas Podolski was also interested in taking over the traditional brewery on Cologne's Alter Markt . Markus Krampe and partners became the new tenant; In September 2015, after extensive renovation, the Gaffelbrauhaus reopened with modern sports bar elements.

The Gaffel Haus is one of the historical “stops” on the Cologne Brewery Trail .
