Valery Alexandrowitsch Belikow ( Russian Валерий Александрович Беликов ; born July 19, 1925 in Morozovsk ; † November 12, 1987 in Wünsdorf ) was a Soviet Army General and from 1986 to 1987 Commander in Chief of the Group of Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD).

Life

Second World War

During the German-Soviet War , Belikov served in the Red Army from 1942 and was assigned to the fighting force in July 1942. He fought as a rifle and MPi rifleman, commander of a unit and assistant to the commander of a rifle platoon on the South , Transcaucasus , 3rd Ukrainian and 4th Ukrainian fronts . In July 1944 he was posted from the front to study at a tank school , which he completed in 1945.

post war period

Until December 1945 Belikov served as a tank commander, from 1946 as the commander of a tank division and from 1950 as an assistant to the chief of staff of a tank battalion . After serving as an assistant to the battalion chief of armored artillery from January to March 1951 , Belikov worked as an adjutant in the leadership of the armored forces of the Soviet Army until June 1952 . In 1949 he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). In 1956 Belikov graduated from the Military Academy of Mechanized and Motorized Forces and was deployed as deputy commander and from November 1958 as commander of a tank battalion. After he became deputy commander and political officer of a tank regiment in 1960 , he served as commander of the tank regiment from November 1962 and from 1965 to 1966 as deputy commander of a tank division . In 1968 Belikov graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Soviet Army and in 1973 and 1982 further courses at this academy. In 1968 he became the commander of an armored division, in December 1971 first deputy army commander and from August 1972 army commander. Belikov was appointed as the first deputy commander of the Odessa Military District in May 1974. Two years later he commanded the armed forces of the North Caucasian Military District and, from August 1979, the Carpathian Military District. By resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on November 4, 1983, General Belikov was appointed Army General. From 1980 to 1987 he was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and from 1986 a candidate for the Central Committee of the CPSU .

On July 12, 1986, he became supreme commander of the Soviet Forces Group in Germany. According to official information, he died unexpectedly on November 12, 1987 in the staff of the GSSD in Wünsdorf of heart failure.

Belikov was buried in the city ​​cemetery in Kiev .
