The private brewery Gaffel Becker & Co. OHG is a brewery based in Cologne . The company is a member of the Kölner Brauerei-Verband e. V., has signed the Kölsch Convention and is entitled to brew Kölsch . The company's best-known brand is Gaffel Kölsch .

history

The name Gaffel Kölsch is derived from the Kölner Gaffeln , which were the political arm of the guilds and merchants in Cologne in 1396. “Gaffel” was the old Cologne expression for a two-pronged fork spit that Cologne merchants brought from Venice in the 11th century . With the Verbundbrief of September 14, 1396, the first democratic constitution of the city of Cologne, the total of 22 gaffs took over the city council and even provided the mayor , lay judges and judges . Their regular evening meetings were rounded off with food and drinks, for which they sat down in the oldest building on the Alter Markt , the Gaffel Haus . The building was mentioned in a document as early as 1213 and has existed in its current form since 1580.

The brewery and restaurant Zum Leysten, first mentioned in 1302, is officially run as "braxatoria supra Monticulum", ie "the brewery above the hill", where today's Gaffel-Brauhaus is located on Eigelstein 41-43. The brewery was reopened in 1822 by Gottfried Joseph Schumacher under the name “Zum Brusselser Hof”. Schumacher ran the brewery until 1857. After his death, his siblings ran the brewery until they sold it to Reinhard Joseph Appel in 1859. His widow continued to run the Brussels court until 1874. In the following period until 1888 the house was only a restaurant. The brewer Adam Lenzen operated a house brewery there for a while. Then it operated as a restaurant and beer trade under the name Glückauf Brauerei AG. On May 24, 1908, the Becker brothers took over the brewery, rebuilt the inn and changed the name to “In der Gaffel” after the “Kölner Gaffeln”. The house received another renovation in 1918 when the interior was redesigned with historical motifs from the city of Cologne.

Before the Second World War , 5000 hectoliters were produced. At the end of the 1940s the amount rose to 10,000 hectoliters. The private brewery is now in the fourth generation and has the legal form of an OHG . From 1972 the brothers Heinrich (1946–2017) and Johannes Becker are jointly full partners as descendants of the company founders.

At the shareholders' meeting on December 6, 2006, they got into disputes about their own salary increases and expense reports. Heinrich Becker (47% stake) excluded his brother Johannes (38%) from the management by a shareholder resolution because he allegedly settled private travel, entertainment and fuel costs through the company. Heinrich Becker complained against it and his brother Johannes Becker countered with counter-laws. Heinrich's son Heinrich Philipp (managing director since 2007 with 15%) should be appointed sole operative managing director.

On December 19, 2013, the Cologne Higher Regional Court revoked Heinrich Becker's power to manage and confirmed the effectiveness of a shareholder resolution on the dismissal of Managing Director Johannes Becker. The court also named his son Heinrich Philipp Becker as managing director with sole power of representation. In the appeal judgment of January 2015, the BGH confirmed that Heinrich Becker had to resign as managing director and that the appointment of his son Heinrich Philipp Becker as managing director is lawful. The new managing director decided in August 2014 that the entire beer production would be relocated from Eigelstein to Porz-Gremberghoven for reasons of capacity and productivity .

On April 2, 2014, the Federal Cartel Office imposed on the private brewery Gaffel Becker & Co as well as other breweries in Germany and the Verband Rheinisch-Westfälischer Brauereien e. V. Fines for prohibited price fixing for beer. The legal amount of the action was a total of 231.2 million euros. Heinrich Becker died on January 19, 2017 at the age of 71.

Production and sales

For reasons of space, the bottled beer is bottled in the Bolten brewery in Korschenbroich and in the Königshof brewery in Krefeld .

In 2013, sales of Gaffel Kölsch and the associated brands were over 480,000 hectoliters. Due to the share of Fassbrause (84,000 hectoliters), the 2004 output was almost reached again. Despite a decline of 6%, Gaffel is one of the largest providers of draft beer in Germany with around 60% of its beer being bottled.

In 2013, Gaffel had a market share of 33% in Kölsch gastronomy and a market share of 15% in retail. So Gaffel is number 2 behind Reissdorf and before Früh .

Dissemination and sponsorship

The core sales area is the administrative district of Cologne and the wider area such as the Bergisches Land , the Westerwald , the Eifel and the regions of Bonn , Koblenz , Düren and Aachen .

Gaffel Kölsch is also served in larger German cities such as Berlin , Düsseldorf , Hamburg and Hanover . The export takes place in the EU as well as to China , Russia and the USA .
