The Bertha Order was founded on May 30, 1910 by Prince Leopold IV zur Lippe as an Order of Merit for Women .

Order classes

The order consisted of three classes and an associated medal of merit:

  • Bertha order with crown
  • Bertha order without a crown
  • Cross of Merit of Women
    • Women's Merit Medal

Order decoration

The medal is a silver, light purple enameled paw cross , with the lower cross arm being slightly longer. The year 1910 can be read on this . In the red enameled medallion of the cross, which is surrounded by a laurel wreath , the intertwined initials L B (Leopold and Bertha) surmounted by the prince's crown . On the reverse of the medallion, which is also enclosed by a laurel wreath, the inscription DEM FRAUEN MERDIENST .

The Cross of Merit for Women has the same shape, but without the enamel.

The Bertha order was worn on a white ribbon with red, white and red stripes on both sides. The Cross of Merit and the medal on a yellow ribbon with red-yellow-red side stripes.

Awards

The decoration with the crown was reserved exclusively for the princess and was only awarded twice, to Bertha Fürstin zur Lippe on May 30, 1910 and on May 30, 1922 to Anna Fürstin zur Lippe. Otherwise, the order could be awarded to all women and virgins who had rendered outstanding services through self-sacrificing personal work in the field of charity , in the church or in the social field, as well as through loyal long-term services or through outstanding individual deals .

With the abdication of Prince Leopold IV on November 11, 1918, the order was no longer awarded with the exception of his second wife.
