Bertulf of Bruges

Bertulf von Bruges (Latin Bertulphus ; † after 1127) was Chancellor of the Counts of Flanders and provost in Bruges .

Life

He was first mentioned in 1101 as provost of the collegiate monastery of St. Donatian in Bruges. He was also Chancellor and Archaplain of the Count of Flanders at the same time . In 1108 Bertulf was named as one of the addressees of an alleged appeal by the Archbishop of Magdeburg ( Magdeburg Appeal 1108 ) against the Slavs. Bertulf was described in a later chronicle as very rich, arrogant and vicious. In 1127 he is said to have known about the planned assassination of Count Karl von Flanders .
