The LWL- Berufsbildungswerk Soest is an institution for the professional and social rehabilitation of blind and visually impaired adolescents and young adults. It is an educational institution sponsored by the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association (LWL) based in Münster. Today's facility emerged from the von Vincke'schen Provincial Blind Institute Soest from 1847.

Career choice decision and career preparation

Through a work trial or aptitude test, visually impaired and blind people can get to know professional activities in practice and thus determine whether a job actually corresponds to their ideas and possibilities. As part of a profiling, performance and requirement profiles are drawn up for certain activities, with particular attention being paid to visual impairment.

To prepare for vocational training or other professional qualifications, basic blind technical training (BTG) or vocational preparatory training (BvB) can be completed at the LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest.

Professional qualification

The LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest offers vocational training in three professional fields in which blind and visually impaired people with their disabilities can work competitively. All vocational training is geared towards the special requirements of blind and visually impaired trainees. The necessary aids and equipment are available.

Currently (August 2019) apprenticeships in accordance with Section 4 and Section 66 of the Vocational Training Act in the three occupational fields:

The vocational training is carried out in close cooperation with private companies, public institutions or authorities. Internships and in-company training sections are agreed individually.

The LWL-Berufskolleg Soest, special school with a special focus on seeing, which is located on the same site, offers the associated vocational school lessons .

The aim of all vocational training is to find a job on the general labor market.

The educational measures of the LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest include regular advice on aids, training in handling the various aids, necessary orientation and mobility training as well as individual, additional support. The intermediate and final exams are taken before the competent chambers, which also issue the final certificates. In addition, various additional qualifications can be acquired.

The LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest supports the graduates in their search for suitable jobs.

Since 1999 the LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest, in cooperation with the LWL-Berufskolleg Soest, has been supporting visually impaired and blind people with in-company vocational training. In addition to the training courses offered at the LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest, blind and visually impaired trainees have completed in-company training in the following professions, among others:

Advice center for blind and visually impaired people in employment

In close cooperation with the treating ophthalmologist as well as the specialist services of the LWL integration office and the technical advisors of the employment agency, solutions are developed that are tailored to the individual visual performance and the specific conditions at the workplace. If necessary, the consultants go directly to the workplace in order to develop solutions with the employees concerned, but also with their colleagues and superiors.

The advice center for blind and visually impaired people in working life has experienced specialist staff and extensive aids. Magnifying optical and electronic visual aids from almost all manufacturers, computer peripherals for the blind and visually impaired, special furniture and lighting are available for advice and training. In addition, a pool of resources is available in the advice center. It is used to test different aids in everyday use at the workplace.

The advice center offers advice and training especially for the following people.

  • Employers who employ or intend to employ a visually impaired or blind employee.
  • Employees who, despite wearing optimal glasses, have permanent health concerns with regard to work at computer workstations in accordance with the employer's liability insurance association principles (G 37 point 3.3.2.).
  • Employees who work in industrial and technical workplaces and are no longer able to carry out their task safely or quickly enough due to reduced vision.
  • Employees who can no longer carry out their previous job as usual due to impaired vision.
  • Visually impaired young people who are in the process of choosing a career.
  • Visually impaired adolescents and young adults who are completing in-company training.
  • Visually impaired and blind people who are currently unemployed and whose job opportunities are to be clarified with optimized equipment and training.
  • Visually impaired and blind workers who require computer training.

Living

In addition to the “Professional Qualification” department, the LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest has a dormitory and a specialist service that provides additional services for the professional and social rehabilitation of the participants - such as B. Orientation and mobility training - contributes.

The LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest has a nationwide catchment area with a focus on North Rhine-Westphalia . It has 140 places for apprenticeships and 124 in dormitories. Around 70 percent of the graduates of the LWL-Berufsbildungswerk Soest get a job on the general labor market.
