In the Roman Empire there was a bestiarius (plural: bestiarii ):
- criminals condemned to death by wild animals in arenas , see: Damnatio ad bestias ( Latin "condemnation to the beasts")
- a genus of gladiators specializing in animal baiting ( venationes ) ; the Venator
