The Beurten (from holland .: beurt , order, series) were associations of shipowners whose purpose was to regulate the voyages for ships on the same route . They had to sail in a certain order and at the same time intervals and were only allowed to wait a certain time at the individual ports for cargo to then make way for the next ship. The ship owners belonging to such associations were called Beurtman .

The principle has been preserved in the Börteschifffahrt on Heligoland .
