Bhonsle

The Bhonsle were an influential Marathan dynasty in British India .

Members of the family ruled Satara , Thanjavur , Nagpur and Kolhapur in the 17th century .

After the defeat of the Marathas in the Third Marath War , the Bhonsle remained in power as autonomous rulers in their states, but recognized British sovereignty . In the middle of the 19th century the ruling Bhonsle families in Satara, Thanjavur and Nagpur died out and these areas were annexed by the British. Only Kolhapur remained as a princely state until 1947 when it joined India .
