God Man Dog ( Chin. 流浪 神 狗 人 , Liu lang shen gou ren , Eng . "Gods, people and stray dogs") is a drama film by the Taiwanese director Chen Singing . The film premiered on October 5, 2007 at the Pusan International Film Festival and was shown at the Forum of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008 , where it received the Tagesspiegel readers' jury award. The cinema release in Germany was on April 30, 2009.

action

The film tells three parallel stories that come together at the end on the country road. It's about lost souls roaming around like stray dogs in search of happiness. Niu Jiao, the owner of a truck that drives a Buddha statue around in a glass shrine, looks after things like: B. the boy Xian, whom he picks up when he tries to steal from him. The other characters are an unhappy young mother in her luxury marriage and a peasant couple whose daughter has migrated to the city.

With elements such as infant death and alcoholism, theft and road accidents, an escaped pedigree dog and a wooden leg that needs to be replaced, a Taiwan in upheaval is portrayed, between the big city of Taipei and the lonely streets in the country, between the older generation and the young who are ready to leave , between the inherited belief in gods and more recent missionary attempts by fanatical Christians.

criticism

The film service attested the film "poetic images" with which it illuminates "life in a society shaped by Buddhism and Christianity, but increasingly materialistic". Thanks to the “(main) figure of the 'godmobile' driver”, “the socially critical message is combined with a humorous, tongue-in-cheek style”.

According to Tagesspiegel , the elements of the film result in a "reflection on the nature of happiness [...] - grounded again and again through unexpected moments of comic situations". Here, the various aspects "elegiac and elegant" would be tied together.

Awards

In addition to the Berlinale, the film was shown at numerous festivals around the world, including 2007 in Vancouver , 2008 in Chicago and 2009 in Locarno . At the 2008 Asian Film Awards , lead actor Jack Kao was nominated for Best Actor, but received no award. In 2008 the film won the Durban Award for Best Screenplay.
