Library: Research and Practice is a specialist library journal.

history

The first volume appeared in 1977. The three editors Paul Kaegbein (* 1925), Hans Joachim Kuhlmann and Elmar Mittler had the goal of providing "a quick and broad overview of the status and development of international library research" with the new journal.

The main focus of the journal is on technical articles and reviews , as well as research and conference reports, bibliographical overviews, literature references and articles “for practice”.

The magazine appears three times a year with an edition of 1,800 copies, the individual issues usually have between 120 and 150 pages. Most of the contributions are published in German; Abstracts of the essays are also available in English and French. The three founders of the journal continue to belong to the now expanded group of editors; The editor-in-chief is Elmar Mittler, the long-time director of the Göttingen State and University Library .

Library: Research and Practice is published by K. G. Saur Verlag , which was taken over by the Walter de Gruyter group in 2006 .

A general register was published for the first 25 years (1977–2001). All volumes are now also available in digitized form. Free access twelve months after publication is available on the de Gruyter website. In addition, since 2017, preprints open access have been published on the HU Berlin repository at the same time as a new edition is published.
