Image position

In ophthalmic optics, the image position is the place in the eye at which the image generated by the optical device of the eye is created. If this image lies in the retinal plane of a healthy eye, then the brain sees sharply.

If the image is in front of the retinal plane, the brain sees out of focus when looking into the distance. The eye is nearsighted ( myopic ). If the image is behind the retinal plane, the brain sees out of focus when looking up close. The eye is clear (hyperop). In both cases, one speaks of an axial image position error because the image position is not in the retinal plane.
