description

On the 52 × 37.3 cm painting, Johannes Carion is depicted as a three-quarter portrait on a brown background. He wears a gray-brown cap with black-orange sleeves. In the picture you can see his full body. It is staged by the diagonal lines with the coat collar with light marten fur in such a way that the heavy body in connection with a concentrated facial expression only appears as a foil. This creates an expression of mobility and mental tension in the picture. On the left over his shoulder is a coat of arms. The Latin caption in the upper left part of the picture reads in translation "I am Cario, the famous author of much-read works that I have written on the basis of my work and my studies, I examine the stars and praise the names of the constellations".

It is believed that the picture came to the Electoral Library in Cölln an der Spree , later remained in the possession of the Royal Library and was integrated into the German State Library via the Prussian State Library . At the beginning of the 20th century, the portrait was rediscovered by the art historian Aby Warburg and Emil Jakobs.
