Bilioma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A bilioma is a real or false cyst filled with bile or is a bile leak with intra-abdominal bile accumulation. The bilioma is a possible surgical complication of hemihepatectomy , cholecystectomy and liver transplantation , which often arises from an anastomotic leak. A bilioma can also result from the formation of a fistula . The diagnosis is not infrequently made radiologically. CT , MRI and ERCP are suitable examination methods to detect a bilioma.

Therapy for bilioma can take different approaches, depending on the size, location and cause of the bilioma, but also on whether there are any signs of infection. As a result, the following therapy options exist:

  • Wait and watch the development
  • Drain the bilioma and initiate antibiotic therapy
  • Surgical removal of the bilioma + antibiotic therapy
