Internal narration

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An internal narration is a narrative that is framed by a frame narration .

In the concept of multi-layered narration, which enjoyed great popularity in 19th century German literature, internal narration is the second level of text that is surrounded by another epic unit. The internal narrative is thus the "narrative within the narrative."

It is characteristic that the narrator of the internal story appears as a character in the framework story, which is mostly conceived as an oral narrative situation.

A third text level can be constructed in the internal plot, the framework of which then becomes the original internal plot. Theoretically, the expansion of the multilayeredness is not limited, which makes very complex internal narratives possible.
