Bir al-Abd ( Arabic بئر العبد, DMG Biʾr al-ʿAbd ) is a city in the Shimal Sina Governorate in Egypt .

geography

The city is located in the north of the Sinai Peninsula , about 80 kilometers west of al-Arish , not far from Lake Bardawil .

The city is located on the Egyptian international coastal route.

history

The name means "well of the slave". It is believed that the name goes back to an actual well. On August 9, 1916, a conflict between the Sinai Front during the First World War took place here. The ANZAC Mounted Division of the British Empire conquered areas occupied by the Ottomans .

On November 24, 2017, when the al-Rawda mosque was attacked, a terrorist attack on a mosque about 30 kilometers east of Bir al-Abd took place with more than 300 dead.
