Birgel (Upper Winter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birgel lies on the Rheinhöhe above Oberwinter , to which it also belongs today. It is part of the city of Remagen .

The place was first mentioned in 1166 in a document from the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald von Dassel . In 1316 there is evidence of a parish for Birgel . It is not certain whether Birgel or Oberwinter was the mother or daughter church. The place Bandorf and desolate fallen one field were certainly branches of Birgel.

1318 Oberwinter and Birgel were given to the Lord von Landskron as a fief . Birgel remained a small community . In 1850 it had 62 inhabitants and 15 houses, around 1900 there were 87 people.

By establishing Bonn as the federal capital, Birgel became a place of residence for many new citizens.
