Birmingham Zoo

The Birmingham Zoo is a zoological garden, which in 1950 in Birmingham , Alabama was founded.

The zoo was opened in 1955; the first attraction was a monkey island. In the same year the zoo received two elephants.

The zoo is 20 hectares and has 950 animals from 230 species including many critically endangered animals. The zoo has been run by a private, not-for-profit company since 1999 that focuses primarily on breeding programs. It is located, together with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens , in Lane Park, an area of ​​90 hectares.
