History and symbolism

The tree was hit by two bombs in 1944 and did not recover from the burns until the 1970s. In 1945 Czech nationalists hoisted a flag on a tree. In the same year two Sudeten Germans were killed under the tree . In the 1960s, some celebrations and birthdays were held under the tree. When a branch broke off in 1969, the pear tree was to be felled a year later; however, this plan was refrained from due to protests from local residents.
