The Bismarck Monument was a memorial in honor of the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in Breslau . It stood on what was then Königsplatz (today: plac Jana Pawła II ).

history

The idea of a Bismarck monument in Breslau was born in 1898, shortly after Otto von Bismarck's death. The memorial was unveiled on October 16, 1900 and cost 120,000 marks. The sculptor was Peter Breuer from Berlin.

The memorial depicted Bismarck in uniform and an open coat. In his right hand he was holding a rolled-up certificate, in his bent left hand a pallasch . The bronze statue was 4.5 m high, the base 5.5 m high. The base came from Robert Hankow from Berlin. On the front side the inscription BISMARCK was to be read, on the reverse side DIE THANKBAREN SCHLESIER, 1900 . Opposite the monument, the Bismarck Fountain was built in 1905, which is now called the Battle and Victory Fountain (Polish Fontanna Alegoria Walki i Zwycięstwa ). This has been a listed building since October 7, 1980.

After the Second World War , the monument was dismantled and melted down. Today there is a green area on the site.
