The epic is about King Biterolf of Toledo and his son Dietleib and is handed down in the Ambras book of heroes . It probably dates from the middle of the 13th century. The following is told in short two-line verses: Biterolf moves to Etzel's court and helps him in many wars. Dietleib, grown up, follows him. The Burgundians offend him while crossing the Rhine. When Etzel arrived, he helped him against the Prussians . There is an argument with the unrecognized father. Rüdiger von Bechelaren mediates ; Father and son recognize each other. After the end of the war, they set out for Burgundy to avenge Dietleib's insult. The following description of the fight is identical in every detail to that of the rose garden in Worms . For their services to Etzel's farm, Biterolf and Dietleib received Styria as a fief from Etzel .
