Bitstamp is a cryptocurrency exchange based in Luxembourg and London.

history

Bitstamp was founded in autumn 2011 by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak in Slovenia. The founders stated that with Bitstamp they were offering a European alternative to the then dominant Mt. Gox crypto exchange .

In April 2013 the seat was relocated to London due to political and economic tensions in Slovenia. Bitstamp is registered in London as a limited company . The company's purpose is trading ( exchange ). Bitstamp focuses on trading cryptocurrencies instead of traditional banking services such as account management or lending. Therefore, the company in the UK is currently not under the control of the UK banking regulator Financial Conduct Authority .

In February 2014, Bitstamp was the victim of a DDoS attack and had to interrupt trading for several days.

In January 2015, hackers captured 19,000 Bitcoin from Bitstamp customers. At the time of the hack, the Bitcoin was worth less than 5 million euros.

Bitstamp has had a second office in Luxembourg since April 2016. The company is registered as a European company in Luxembourg . The company received a license from the Luxembourg Ministry of Finance to operate as a financial service provider ( payment institution ) throughout the EU .

Towards the end of 2019 it should be possible to make deposits in British pounds in addition to euros and dollars on Bitstamp.

functionality

Bitstamp enables euros and dollars to be deposited into a bank account at the Slovenian Gorenjska Bank . With the deposited money, customers can buy Bitcoin , Ether , XRP , Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash . As with online brokers for stocks, customers can add additional orders with regard to duration and price.

In order to combat money laundering, customers have to register according to the know-your-customer principle. To secure customer deposits is in payouts of crypto currencies and fiat currencies also a two-factor authentication required.
