Black's Law Dictionary

Black's Law Dictionary , abbreviated Black's , dt. Blacks Law Dictionary , is the authoritative legal dictionary for the laws of the United States . It has been cited as a legal authority in many cases by the Supreme Court . The latest edition, of which there are also abridged and pocket editions, is a useful starting point for both laypeople and students in the face of unfamiliar legal terms. It is the preferred reference work for definitions in legal papers and reasons for judgments.

Black's Law Dictionary was founded by and named after Henry Campbell Black . The first edition appeared in 1891, the second edition in 1910. The tenth edition was published in 2014 by Thomson Reuters , edited by Bryan A. Garner.
