Charlotte Thouret
Sister Charlotte Thouret OCD (civil Anne-Marie-Madeleine Thouret , born September 16, 1715 in Mouy , † July 17, 1794 in Paris ) was a French Carmelite who was executed as one of the martyrs of Compiègne in Paris. The sixteen martyrs of Compiègne are venerated as blessed in the Roman Catholic Church .
She entered the Carmel of Compiègne and made her vows on August 19, 1740 . She was elected subprioress twice, in 1764 and 1778. Because she and 15 other Carmelites from the Carmel of Compiègne refused to take the oath of the civil constitution of the clergy out of loyalty to the Church and to their religious vows , they became during the reign of terror arrested during the French Revolution on June 23, 1794. In Paris they were guillotined on July 17, 1794 after a show trial . Before they were executed, they publicly renewed their baptismal vows and religious vows.
Sr. Charlotte Thouret was beatified by Pope Pius X on May 27, 1906, together with her companions . Her feast day is July 17th .
