Bubble counters are used in the ( chemical ) laboratory for experimental work with gases to check the strength of the gas flow. Bubbles of uniform size emerge from the inlet pipe, which can be counted if the gas flow is not too large. The number of bubbles per period is a measure of the amount of gas flowing through the apparatus or the amount of gas that develops during a reaction.

The sealing liquid in the bubble counter should be chosen so that it does not react with the gas. White oil ( paraffin oil ) is often used as a sealing liquid.
