Blake Alphonso Higgs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blake Alphonso Higgs (* 1915 in Matthew Town, Inagua, Bahamas ; † 1986), better known as Blind Blake , was the most famous of all Goombay / Calypso musicians in the Bahamas between the 1930s and 1960s .

For most of his career, Blind Blake was employed at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Nassau . Part of his extensive repertoire was the song Love, Love Alone , a composition by the calypso artist Caresser from Trinidad about the abdication of the English King Edward VIII . Blind Blake's version of this calypso is also believed to have pleased the former king himself, who - as the Duke of Windsor - was governor of the Bahamas during World War II.
