Block chain

A block chain is a chain made up of drilled metal blocks and outer plates that are pinned together with pins. It has a short division (block) and a long division (outer tabs). Block chains have a relatively high weight and high tooth flank wear, but are indispensable in many areas because of their rigidity (torsion-resistant).

Block chains are often used as pull chains in conveyor machines for gentle conveying of mostly powdery or fine-grained bulk material. Due to the structure of this type of chain, the conveying capacity is not very high, but the service life is very long because of the low chain speed due to the design.

Difference to roller chain

In the block chain, massive blocks are connected with tabs. In the case of roller chains, on the other hand, bolts (rollers) are connected to plates (alternating inner and outer plates). With the same pin spacing, half the pinion spacing is required for roller chains compared to block chains.

Block chains were originally used on bicycles with a diamond frame to transmit power between the pedal and the rear wheel, typically with a sprocket spacing (support spacing) of one inch (2.54 cm) and a width of 3/16 inch (4.7625 mm) around the 1930s around then the switch to roller chains (1/2 inch span, 3/32 inch width) took place.
