Blues March

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blues March is a composition by tenor saxophonist and arranger Benny Golson .

The composition

She was recorded for the first time by Blue Mitchell for his album Big Six in July 1958, four months later by Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers in 1958 for the album Moanin ' ( Blue Note Records ), of which Golson was saxophonist and musical director at the time.

When Benny Golson was redesigning the musical repertoire of the Messengers, he had the idea to include a march in the program, but not in the manner of the usual military marches; it should sound more funky in the sense of blues. Golson told Blakey to play it as if he were in the band of the American Legion, " Blues March " was an integral part of the messenger program from then on. When they arrived in Germany for a tour, they were received at the airport by a local band with a “ Blues March ”.

" Blues March " has been recorded several times by the Jazz Messengers, but also by Blue Mitchell and Gene Harris .
