I remember Clifford

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I Remember Clifford is a jazz composition by tenor saxophonist and arranger Benny Golson .

Benny Golson himself recorded it for the first time for his album Benny Golson And The Philadelphians on December 12, 1958. Benny Golson played shortly before in Dizzy Gillespie's band from 1956 to 1958. In this formation he also made a name for himself as a playwright. The composition I Remember Clifford was created under the impression of the painful loss of trumpeter Clifford Brown, who had just died in an accident at the time . Benny Golson composed this piece spontaneously in 1956 during a performance with the Gillespie Band, when the musicians heard of the fatal accident of their friend and colleague and Golson improvised on his piece Whisper Not .

I Remember Clifford later became a jazz standard and, along with Django, is considered the "most played epitaph piece in jazz".

I Remember Clifford was written by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers , Arturo Sandoval , Bud Powell , Cedar Walton , Don Byas , JR Monterose , Keith Jarrett , the Modern Jazz Quartet , Oscar Peterson , Nancy Wilson , Slide Hampton , Sonny Rollins , Stan Getz , Tete Montoliu , Yusef Lateef , The Manhattan Transfer and other musicians. The trumpeter Lee Morgan , who was strongly inspired by Clifford Brown's playing style, interpreted the piece as early as 1957 on his album "Lee Morgan Vol. 3", which consists exclusively of compositions by Benny Golson.
