Ground ice
Ground ice , and ground ice is a generic term for all forms of ice in the frozen ground , respectively loose rock .
This includes pore ice and ice that fills larger cavities. This can be segregation ice , injection ice or various forms of so-called ice veins, especially ice wedges . According to the classic American view, ice that has formed on the surface that was subsequently covered - like the dead ice covered by debris from a glacier - is not included.
Furthermore, a distinction is made between epigenetic and syngenetic ground ice. Epigenetic ground ice is formed after sedimentation of the ground, while syngenetic ground ice is formed while the surrounding sediment is forming.
