Floor wall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cross members in the floor area of ships are referred to as floor walls . They connect the outer skin, the frames and the keel to one another. They also serve to support the raised floor . As a wall of water or oil tanks, the floor wall is welded to be water and oil-tight. It is generally provided with openings. The floor wall is mainly stressed by static water pressure, dynamic sloshing , the mass of cargo and machinery, as well as elastic bending of the hull .

In particular, on wooden boats they also establish a connection between the right and left halves of the boat. In sailing boats with a ballast keel, they are exposed to particular stress, as they have to transfer the considerable forces of the ballast keel that occur when the keel is tilted to the rest of the hull. On boats and yachts, floor walls often serve as a support for the floor boards.
