Body and Soul is the seventh studio album by British singer and composer Joe Jackson .
Jackson himself describes the photo used on the album cover, which shows him with a saxophone and cigarette against a black background, as an homage to the jazz musician Sonny Rollins . In 1957, the Blue Note label published the album Sonny Rollins - Volume 2 with a cover photo, which at first glance can only be distinguished from the photo on Body and Soul by the color scheme . “A few years later, Rolling Stone printed the two covers side by side and thought they were being very clever by 'catching' me 'copying' it” (German: A few years later Rolling Stone magazine printed both album photos side by side and she thought they were particularly clever at catching me copying).
background
Preparations for the album began in the summer of 1983 when Jackson met with music producer David Kershenbaum in a sushi bar in Los Angeles. Both agreed that the music recordings of the time left an artificial impression, which was ultimately due to the recording technology in the then modern recording studios.
In New York, they therefore looked for suitable recording locations such as theaters or dance halls whose acoustics supported their ideas of a natural-looking music recording. The sound of the recording should be as similar as possible to a live recording.
They decided on an old mason's lodge made of wood and stone, the Brooklyn Masonic Temple , which was used by Vanguard Studios for classic recordings. In order to be able to make optimal use of the special features of the space, technicians installed two Neumann M-50 microphones at a height of five meters. The balance between the various instruments was ensured by the individual microphones, one for each musician. The recording was made on a 3M 32-track digital recording system, a 3M DMS 81 4-track was used for mastering. Work on the final master tape was completed in Studio B at Atlantic on February 7, 1984.
In 1939 Coleman Hawkins published his interpretation of the jazz standard Body and Soul , which made him famous and made him a forerunner of the bebops. Jackson chose the name for his own album with this in mind.
review
The diverse compositions on Body And Soul, which were also able to achieve chart successes, supported Jackson's reputation during the transition from pop musician to demanding composer.
