bol.de is a brand of Thalia Bücher GmbH, under which articles from the ranges of books, e-books , e-book readers , music, film, software, games and toys are offered in an online shop .

history

Bol.de was founded in 1999 as a subsidiary of the Bertelsmann DirectGroup . A takeover of 30% of Amazon by Bertelsmann had previously failed. The abbreviation bol ( B ertelsmann O n l ine) was in the course of the formation of AOL Europe protected as a pure combination of letters by Bertelsmann. As a mediastore, bol was to compete with amazon.com everywhere outside of the USA ; in the USA, Bertelsmann subsidiary barnesandnoble.com should do so. In 1999 online shops were started in France (February 4th), Great Britain (March 3rd) and the Netherlands (March 30th) based on the Intershop enfinity software .

In the summer of 2002, Bertelsmann AG's CEO, Thomas Middelhoff, was replaced. Bol was founded under his aegis. After Middelhoff's replacement, many Bertelsmann internet activities were closed. In the course of this, bol.de was sold to Buch.de Internetstores AG in December 2002 . In return, Bertelsmann DirectGroup received a 25.1% stake in Buch.de Internetstores AG, which it increased to 26.7% two years later.

For historical reasons, bol.de had the same logo as the Dutch internet bookseller bol.com until June 2016 . bol.com originally belonged equally to the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group and the Weltbild publishing group . In 2009 bol.com was sold to the Dutch investment fund Cyrte Investments. bol.com has been part of the Dutch supermarket group Koninklijke Ahold since 2012 .

In March 2015 Buch.de Internetstores was on the Thalia Books GmbH merged , which continues the brand.
